The Hall > Community Audit
Drumaroad Community Regeneration(DCR) secured
funding under the IFI Community Leadership
Programme for the implementnation of a small practical project
locally. We felt that it was essential
to implement a project which was related to the redevelopment
of Drumaroad Hall, and which would
be useful in determining local need. It was agreed that we
should carry out an extensive Community
Audit and Needs Analysis.
The main aim of this Audit was:
- To build
up an accurate socio-economic profile of the Drumaroad and
surrounding area
- To establish the current needs of
the people of Drumaroad. (In doing so our Group will be
more
effective in targeting our work in the future and will remain
focused on responding to this
community need in the redevelopment)
- To establish the level of community
support for the redevelopment of Drumaroad Community
Hall
In an attempt to draw up a clear picture of community need,
and to assess local opinions and views on the need for a new
Centre, DCR decided that a Community Audit
questionnaire should be designed and distributed to every
household in the area. Members of the group distributed the
questionnaires with free post envelopes to 490 homes. A total
of 177 questionnaires were returned giving a very good response
rate of 36%. Although the majority of those responding were
in the 22-49 age group, responses were also received from
12-21 year-olds and 50 year olds to those over 75. Respondents
were encouraged to seek information from all members of their
household when filling in the questionnaire. 53% of the respondents
were female and 41% male. The respondents came from a range
of religious backgrounds and geographic areas. A series of
public meetings were also held in late 2002 to assess initial
public opinion, and give feedback on findings from the community
survey. Consultations were held with local groups who lack
a suitable community facility, as well as with adjacent communities
in Guiness, Dunmore and Edendarriff.
The Key findings from the Community Survey were as follows:
- 76.8% of respondents stated that they
would be interested in using a new multipurpose centre
- The majority of people stated that
they or someone in their home would use the Centre at least
once a week
- In general people felt that that the
parking and the size of Drumaroad Hall are excellent and
convenience of the Hall very good
- 41.2% were in favour of demolition
and complete new building on the same site, and 38.4% preferred
the refurbishment of the existing hall
- 40% stated they would be interested
in helping to establish the new Centre while 38% stated
that
they would be interested in helping to run the new facility
once it is up
- The community would welcome a new
shared venue which would offer a wide range of activities
and services including sports, learning and medical facilities
We would like to thank everyone who participated in the survey
and our consultations which will help us to shape the new
project and meet your needs in the development and the design
of the new Centre.
